Now that you have taken care of the exterior of the home, allow me to offer suggestions on what to tackle regarding the interior.
Where to Start
Pretend for a few moments that you are a buyer. Walk thru the front door of your home, what do you see? Clutter and disorganization or a clean view of the home? Opt for the latter. When you enter a seller’s home, you know what YOU do – you immediately notice whether a home is clean. You are turned off if it’s dirty. I also suggest you walk into your home from the garage. What do you see from this angle?
Clean out Closets and Cabinets
You’ll have to do this anyway. You may as well do it now. You’ll likely discover belongings that you no longer need or want. Sell, trash or drop off the items at a donation center. One important reason to do this is to make it appear that there is an abundance of spacious closets. I am located in Florida where we don’t have basements. So, closet storage is important.
Paint the interior
Has it been a while since the interior was painted? Apply a fresh coat in order to appeal to the masses. Remember, you want top dollar for the home, so make it shine.
Lightbulbs
One important suggestion I make to Sellers is to arrange for ALL the lightbulbs to match. Daylight bulbs are best as opposed to soft white. This change makes the home look lighter and brighter.
Remove personalized items
It is preferred that you remove ALL personalized items, including pictures, jewelry, etc. We want the Buyer to picture themselves (not you) living in the home.
Rent a Storage Unit
Expedite your move by moving items into a storage unit. My husband & I rented a storage unit in the past two moves and I have to share it is much more enjoyable to live without boxes everywhere. It also forces you to look at an item you are about to put into a box and question if you should instead donate it. By the way, we selected a local storage unit that offered a moving van inclusive with the rental of units. This turned out to save money in having to rent a UHAUL.
See you next time! Happy packing & remember to have fun!
